Savage Mayor Janet Williams attended the school when it first opened in 1956 and graduated in a class of 14 students in 1958 — three students had been the school’s first graduates the previous year.
Williams and her former classmates attended the unveiling while celebrating their 60th reunion. She recalled having classes in downtown Savage while they waited for construction on the building to be completed.
Memorabilia reads “Black Dog High School, Savage, MN.” Back then, Williams explained, all Burnsville addresses were listed as Savage because of the location of the post office.
Williams said her class debated the school colors, wrote the school song and received the first year books and class rings. Over the years, Williams and fellow classmates hung on to some of their school memorabilia and were excited to join with the district administration in finding the items a permanent home, she said.
According to Burnsville High School Principal Dave Helke, the display space was built during the school’s remodeling to have a place to tell students more about the school’s history.
“(It’s) a great way to honor our founders and some of our first students here at Burnsville High School and a wonderful way to make sure that we are always celebrating the heritage that we have as a school,” he said.
