< Previous196 Gymnastics continue dominance The girls' gymnastics team, under first year coach Ann Thompson, flexed its strength once again in the 1978-79 season. Led by captains Kathy Rabusch, Karen Noll and Lau re John-son, the squad compiled a 7-2 record and was ranked among the top three teams in the state. Although gymnastics has not been a popular spectator sport, the Braves found the home meets gathering increasingly larger crowds as the team continued in its winning ways. After not having suffered a defeat in over two years, the defending state champions experienced two losses -both of them being to the two highly ranked Edina schools. Edina East edged Burnsville 129.95 to 129 . 15 before the Braves fell to Edina West 140.55-137.65. Although losing t o both teams, Thompson was still opt i-mistic because the scores were among the highest recorded by any team in the state. Other varsity members who contrib -uted to the overall depth of the team in vaulting, uneven parallel bars, floor exercise or balance beam were Lisa Johnson, Denise Crowl, Renee Thomp-son, and Crystal Swisher. The Braves rebounded in their next meet by downing North Dakota's State Champion, Fargo South 135. to , 130 . ••1•m really happy to see that this year's team is so well-balanced in its talent . This year was no exception as the Braves, with almost the exact same athletes who participated on the highly successf u I cross country running , teams, turned in its best season to date. The girls' squad were runners -up in the state meet while the boys' team placed third . "We did all right. There's always room for improvement but we accomplished most of our goals and we had fun. That's what counts." The girls, led throughout the year by Lisa Green, skied to a 8 -0 record before winning regionals . · The Braves placed three racers in the top ten in the girls' state meet, but were unable to stop top ranked Blake. Kathy Ku ngness placed third while Green came in fourth and Lori Bock-lund ended up eighth. Other skiers were: Carol Glazer -19th, Karen Klungness -23rd, and Julie Seidel -38th. After an opening day loss to Lakeville, the boys' squad reeled off seven straight victories. The Braves captured the regional trophy and advanced to state as the number one ranked team in Minnesota. : Burnsville number three man, Mark Theroux, was forced to pull out of the state meet because of respiratory problems and with that went the Braves ' hopes of a title. Todd Boonstra skied well as he had for the entire year and finished second. Tim Connelly grabbed ninth place. Others in the meet were: . Doug Elsass -18th, Dave Overdier -33rd, Greg Wallace -35th . The team won its first fo.ur meets but only managed to win two of its last nine. Reflecting upon the losses Coach Roger Zeug said, "Our goal this year was to be 9-5, but we fell short. We lost some close matches we shouldn't have lost." This year the team showed balance. Ten of twelve wrestlers ended with win-ning records. However, at the sub -regional meet, the squad placed a mere fifth. Steve Mann, Brian Young, Pat Bergstrom, Ed Studer, and Steve Ream, advanced to the region meet which was held after press deadline.
