Lone Oak sculpture unveiled in Eagan 2019Lone Oak’ unveiled in Eagan- Burnsville Eagan Sun/Thisweek News - by Andy Rogers Sept 29, 2019
In photo - Eagan Mayor Mike Maguire, left, thanks artist Jim Brenner.

City’s 22nd public art project

The “Lone Oak” was revealed last week at Eagan City Hall plaza.

The sculpture of an oak tree, completed with COR-TEN steel, was recently constructed by artist Jim Brenner.

“The steel tree reaches to the sky, adorned with colorful, transparent leaves,” Mayor Mike Maguire said according to a copy of his prepared remarks. “You can see the history, diversity, and projection of our community in this tree. It connects to our deep roots and a long history of the original Lone Oak Tree, a symbol of Eagan.”

According to the Dakota County Historical Society, the historical lone oak tree once stood at what is now the corner of Dodd Road and Highway 55. It served as a meeting place and bulletin board for the small farming community in the 1800s.

The sculpture is also surrounded by limestone benches. It’s the 22nd public piece of art installed by the city.

“In 2015, we as a city adopted aspirational principles for public art and place-making and developed goals for art in our public places,” Maguire said.

He’s proud that the city invests in public art “because our community knows the value of art – and how it brings a sense of place, beauty and connection in our community,” he said.

The unveiling is taking place during Eagan Art Block, a 16-day event with 23 hosts and 40 events celebrating art in Eagan.
