Riley’s was the hot spot in Savage

During the early years, Riley’s Hall was the place to be on Friday nights. “There were some wild dances up there on the second floor,” said John McCarthy, who still lives in downtown Savage.
The Riley Building is probably best known to people passing through downtown as the old antique building. But over the years it also housed an auto parts dealership, a television repair and sales business, and a print shop.
It was torn down this week to make way for a new mixed-use facility that will contain market-rate senior housing and retail office space and is being built by the City of Savage and the Scott County HRA.
Long before the building fell into disrepair, it was the center of activity in the village of Savage. It was built by the Riley family and they ran a general store out of the first floor and a dance hall on the second floor and sold ice out of an icehouse in the back yard…
